Abstract

Drug abuse is one of the extraordinary crimes that is currently growing and is very difficult to eradicate. Drug problems can strike from the lower, middle, and the upper classes at any age, so this needs to be watched out for and eradicated together. In terms of sociology, drug use can violate the norms and values that apply in society. This study aims to explain how the causes of drug abuse in Bintan Regency community can occur. Based on this, the author formulates a problem regarding how drug abuse is carried out in the Bintan Regency community. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. Interviews, observation, and documentation are the data collection methods used. The theoretical framework used is the anomie theory by Robert K. Merton and the associative differentiation theory by Edwin H. Sutherland. The informant collection technique that the researcher used was purposive sampling, with a total of five people, consisting of one investigator from Class II A Narcotics Prison in Tanjungpinang City, one head of the Institution Recipient of Obligatory Reporting at the Karsa Foundation, one person as a drug dealer and user, one drug dealer, and one drug user. The data analysis method used in this research is data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study found that drug abuse that occurred in Bintan Regency was due to opportunities and curiosity from within the individual, the influence of the friendship environment
