Abstract

Stratification in correctional institutions in Indonesia often occurs and is not an open secret, sources of news and previous research stated that the tendency for stratification was done by the prisoners from the main government corruption. The purpose to describe social stratification in the Correctional Institution Class II A Tanjungpinang. The research method used descriptive qualitative by purposive sampling taking 9 informants of prisoners, officers and ex-prisoners. Next, the technique and collection in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. Then data analysis according to the stages of data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification, analyzed by using Max Weber's theory of social stratification. The results of research indicated that social stratification in Correctional Institution Class II A Tanjungpinang did occur, the stratification between prisoners and officers was closeness that made the "boss" of drug prisoners could access priority facilities that should not be owned, among the fellow prisoners that “prisoner’ boss†made anotherprisoners to be his servant with guaranteed protection and a sense of security. Seen from 3 dimensions which are (1) the highest hierarchical structure occupied by the "boss" of who were most respected by others because he had power (2) the "boss" had easy access to facilities because his having a higher economy than other prisoners and (3) the "boss" who are believed to come from a great career background and have a lot of money and are known as people who royal, often helping, made the “boss†respected in Correctional Institution Class II A Tanjungpinang.
