STUDENTS’ GRAMMAR ABILITY AND THEIR SPEAKING SKILL: A CORRELATION STUDY

Abstract

Speaking is one of four skills in English which is very necessary skill. Grammar is basic component in languages especially in English which made grammar are always correlated with the four skills. This study demanded to find is there any correlation between grammar and speaking. The purpose of this study is to know there is any correlation between students’ grammar ability and their speaking skill or not. In this study researcher only focuses on students’ daily speaking and students’ simple present tense. The method used in this study was quantitative method. The sample of this study was 7th Grade students of SMPN 11 Bintan where chosen by cluster random sampling technique. The data collected through writing test and speaking test. The data show the mean of students score for grammar and speaking is 9.67 and 9.93. This proves students’ grammar ability and speaking skill are low. The result of this study show the P-Value (probability Value) was 0.000 which less than minimum value of probability 0.05. This proves students’ grammar ability and their speaking skill were significance correlated.
