STUDENTS' DIFFICULTIES IN READING SCIENTIFIC ARTICLES: AN ANALYSIS

Abstract

Reading is the most important thing in all academic disciplines. The objective of this research is to identify factors of causing the students’ difficulties in reading scientific articles by English department students. This research is a qualitative research. The research was conducted in December 21th 2019. The subject of the research was fifth semester students. The technique of collecting the data is interview. The technique of analyzing the data using Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data display and drawing conclusion and verification. The result of the research shows that there are most difficulties students faced when reading scientific articles is dominant in language aspect such as lack of vocabulary, found unfamiliar words, and scientific words with advanced grammar. Comprehension task is another factor causing the students’ difficulties. When reading scientific articles, students just guess the meaning and they found misinterpret. Another factor was topic and genre students found that some journals or articles they read contain bored topic
